Businessman Dr Tagwirei Continues to Make his Mark on Zimbabwe's Development

HARARE —Business mogul Kudakwashe Tagwirei, who was recently appointed senator by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, is increasingly proving to be a key asset to Zimbabwe’s development trajectory

The founder of Sakunda Holdings,Dr Tagwirei’s rise in business began in the energy sector. He has previously recounted how spending about 12 hours in a fuel queue in Harare convinced him that Zimbabwe’s fuel shortages presented a business opportunity.

That experience contributed to the establishment and growth of Sakunda, which has since become a major player in Zimbabwe’s fuel industry. The company has also developed a significant presence in sports sponsorship, supporting leading football clubs including Dynamos and Highlanders.

Over the years, Dr Tagwirei’s business interests have expanded into agriculture, mining, construction and other sectors, while his companies have become involved in projects considered strategically important to Zimbabwe’s economy.

From business to national projects

One of the most prominent areas of Dr Kudakwashe Tagwirei’s involvement has been agriculture.

Through Sakunda, he became closely associated with the government’s Command Agriculture programme, which was designed to boost domestic food production by providing farmers with agricultural inputs and financing.

The programme was credited with contributing to increased agricultural output, including a reported 2.1 million-tonne maize harvest during the 2016/17 farming season.

Sakunda has also been associated with efforts to increase wheat production and expand irrigation infrastructure.

Tagwirei’s business interests have also extended into infrastructure development.

His company, Fossil Contracting, has been involved in major public works, including road construction and the development of the Trabablas Interchange in Harare.

In 2023, the company undertook rehabilitation work on the road linking Donga Business Centre with Chachacha and Lalapanzi in Chirumanzu, improving transport connections for communities in the area.

A growing philanthropic footprint

Beyond his commercial interests, Dr Tagwirei and his wife, Sandra, have expanded their philanthropic activities through the Bridging Gaps Foundation (BGF).

The foundation has focused on practical interventions in healthcare, education, water provision and rural development.

In Nyanga, a medical outreach programme conducted under the foundation’s “Operation Macedonia” initiative treated more than 800 patients, with volunteer medical professionals providing healthcare services and supplies to communities with limited access to specialist care.

In Mutoko, the foundation has supported schools and a clinic with boreholes and solar power systems, addressing access to clean water and reliable electricity.

Its interventions have also included food assistance, medical outreach and educational support in communities across the country.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sakunda donated medical equipment and made Arundel Hospital available for use as a government COVID-19 treatment centre. The company said it spent about US$2.8 million on renovations, equipment and operating costs at the facility.

The hospital has since continued providing free services to members of the public, with more than 10,000 patients reportedly treated at no cost. Its services include surgical operations and emergency care.

A commitment to the church

Dr Tagwirei is also an Elder in the Seventh-day Adventist Church and has supported various church ministries through his philanthropic work.

Through BGF, he has been involved in the transformation of at least 63 SDA-run schools across Zimbabwe.

In June this year, he launched a scholarship fund in honour of the late Elder Harry Dumba, a long-serving member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, after meeting the expenses associated with his funeral.

In 2025, Tagwirei became the first Black recipient of the Global Award of Excellence from the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, recognising his contribution to the church and its work.

Preserving Zimbabwe’s national memory

Dr Tagwirei’s philanthropy has also extended to the preservation of Zimbabwe’s historical heritage.

In December 2025, he donated US$250,000 to the Joshua Nkomo Legacy Restoration Project Trust to support initiatives aimed at preserving the legacy of the late nationalist leader and promoting values of unity, peace and national pride.

The contribution added a heritage dimension to his philanthropic activities, which have increasingly included projects addressing Zimbabwe’s history, culture and national identity.

Tagwirei is also chairman of the Land Tenure Implementation Committee, tasked with overseeing the transition of agricultural, commercial and urban land from traditional permits and 99-year leases into bankable, registrable and transferable title deeds.

The committee is also expected to promote greater productivity on the land, while Tagwirei has pledged support for war veterans.

From entrepreneur to national player

Dr Tagwirei’s growing profile has placed him at the intersection of Zimbabwe’s private sector, public projects and philanthropy.

His journey from identifying an opportunity in Zimbabwe’s fuel shortages to building interests across multiple sectors has been accompanied by an expanding involvement in initiatives addressing national priorities.

From fuel and agriculture to infrastructure, healthcare, education and heritage preservation, Tagwirei’s expanding footprint highlights the increasingly prominent role of private capital and philanthropy in projects that have traditionally been associated with the state.

His story is therefore no longer simply that of an entrepreneur who built a major business empire, but of a businessman whose commercial interests and philanthropic activities have become increasingly intertwined with Zimbabwe’s broader development agenda.
