South African Afro-soul star Lerato 'Lira' Molapo made history in 2019 as the first African woman to have a Barbie doll created in her likeness.
The custom-made doll was unveiled by Mattel as part of Barbie's 60th anniversary "Shero" campaign, which celebrates inspirational women who
are breaking barriers and inspiring the next generation.
Known for embracing her natural hair, skin tone and African identity, Lira said she hoped the doll would inspire girls across the continent to celebrate who they are and dream without limits.
Lira is one of Africa's most celebrated musicians, with hit albums including Feel Good (2006), Soul in Mind (2008), Return to Love (2011), Rise Again (2014), Born Free (2016) and Dream Chaser (2018).
She described the recognition as an affirmation that Africa's culture, beauty and diversity are increasingly being celebrated on the global stage.
Lira's Barbie honour stands as one of the most culturally significant recognitions ever awarded to an African entertainer. It not only celebrated her remarkable musical career but also acknowledged her role in promoting confidence, self-acceptance and African identity.
More than just a toy, Lira's Barbie became a powerful symbol of representation, diversity and African excellence, proving that every girl deserves to see herself reflected in the heroes she looks up to.
