Kenyan University Hospital Achieves Regional First With Robotic Gallbladder Surgery

NAIROBI, Kenya — Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH,N) has achieved a major milestone in surgical care after successfully performing the region’s first robotic-assisted gallbladder removal procedure.


The operation, medically known as robotic-assisted laparoscopic cholecystectomy, combines the expertise of surgeons with advanced robotic technology to enhance precision, visibility and control during minimally invasive surgery.


Dr Abdulkarim Abdalla, Chair of AKUH,N’s Department of Surgery, said the technology builds on conventional keyhole surgery by giving surgeons a three-dimensional view of the operating area and greater flexibility in manipulating surgical instruments.


He explained that the robotic system is controlled entirely by surgeons from a specialised console and does not perform procedures independently.


According to the hospital, the robotic instruments offer a wider range of movement and closely replicate the natural movement of the human hand. This can allow surgeons to operate with greater precision and access areas that may be difficult to reach or clearly visualise using conventional techniques.


The technology may also reduce surgeon fatigue during lengthy procedures because doctors can operate while seated at the console, while benefiting from enhanced visualisation and instrument control.



AKUH,N Chief Executive Officer Rashid Khalani said the achievement reinforces the hospital’s reputation for introducing healthcare innovations in Kenya and across the region.


He said the hospital would continue investing in robotic-assisted surgery with the aim of expanding access while strengthening surgical training, research and clinical excellence.
