RABAT, MOROCCO — Morocco’s national football team, the Atlas Lions, have officially broken into the world’s elite top five, rising to fifth place in the live FIFA Men’s World Rankings.

The historic achievement makes Morocco only the second African nation to reach the FIFA men’s top five, after Nigeria’s Super Eagles achieved the feat in April 1994.

Morocco’s rise follows Brazil’s 1–1 draw against Australia, which saw the North African side climb to 1,808.18 points, leapfrogging both Brazil and Portugal and becoming the highest-ranked African team in the latest standings.

The Atlas Lions’ remarkable ascent is the latest chapter in a golden period for Moroccan football. At the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Morocco became the first African and Arab team to reach a World Cup semi-final, defeating football giants Belgium, Spain and Portugal on their historic run.

The team has continued to build on that success under coach Walid Regragui, combining disciplined defending, slick passing and dangerous attacking play.

Morocco also boasts an impressive collection of international stars, including Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi and Real Madrid midfielder Brahim Díaz, alongside a generation of talented players competing at some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The Atlas Lions’ success has helped raise Morocco’s profile on the global football stage while inspiring a new generation of African footballers and supporters.

With their blend of tactical organisation, individual quality and growing international experience, Morocco’s rise into the FIFA top five represents one of the most significant achievements in African football history.
