Snit Tewoldemedhin: Taking Eritrea to the Miss World Stage for the First Time

From the streets of Asmara to the global Miss World stage, Snit Tewoldemedhin is breaking new ground for Eritrea.

The neuroscience graduate, educator and advocate has become a trailblazer in Eritrean pageantry, having been recognised as the first Eritrean to win Miss Africa USA and the first woman to represent Eritrea at Miss Universe. She is now taking another historic step by representing Eritrea at Miss World for the first time.

But Snit's journey goes beyond beauty and pageantry. She is using her international platform to champion education, inclusion and greater opportunities for children across Africa, turning her story into one of resilience, representation and possibility.

Her achievement also places her within a proud tradition of African women who have used global pageants to put their countries and causes on the international map.

In 1993, Lisa Hanna of Jamaica became the first woman from the Caribbean to win Miss World, while Agbani Darego of Nigeria made history in 2001 as the first indigenous African to win Miss World. Her victory opened new doors for African representation on one of the world's biggest beauty platforms.

In 2019, Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa became the first Black South African woman to win Miss Universe. She used her platform to speak powerfully about representation, gender equality and the importance of young women seeing themselves reflected in positions of influence.

Other African titleholders, including Leila Lopes of Angola, who won Miss Universe in 2011, have similarly demonstrated how international pageantry can become a platform for cultural diplomacy, philanthropy and social advocacy.

Now, Snit Tewoldemedhin is writing a new chapter for Eritrea.
