UCT's New Child Brain Research Unit Highlights Universities' Critical Role in Driving African Innovation

The University of Cape Town (UCT), in partnership with the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), has launched a pioneering research unit dedicated to improving brain health in children, reinforcing the critical role universities play in advancing research, innovation and sustainable development across Africa.

The newly established Discovery Neuroscience in Children: Advancing Understanding and Treatment of Acute Brain Conditions research unit is one of seven new SAMRC Extramural Units introduced across South Africa. Based at UCT and the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, the unit builds on years of scientific excellence by the African Brain Child (ABC) research programme.

Led by Professor Anthony Figaji, the research unit is expected to become a continental centre of excellence for paediatric neuroscience, bringing together clinicians, scientists and researchers to improve understanding, diagnosis and treatment of acute brain conditions affecting children.

Universities as Engines of Innovation

The launch demonstrates how universities have evolved beyond their traditional role of teaching into centres of knowledge creation, technological advancement and problem-solving.

Across the world, universities are responsible for groundbreaking discoveries that improve healthcare, agriculture, engineering, artificial intelligence, climate resilience and industrial development. Through research, innovation and collaboration with governments and industry, higher education institutions help develop solutions to some of society's most pressing challenges.

Research universities also nurture highly skilled professionals, generate patents, support technology transfer and create start-ups that stimulate economic growth. Their laboratories serve as incubators where scientific discoveries are transformed into practical solutions that benefit communities.

The new UCT research unit exemplifies this role by translating laboratory discoveries into improved healthcare for children while simultaneously training the next generation of African neuroscientists.

Addressing Africa's Child Brain Health Challenge

Africa is home to the world's youngest population, yet neurological disorders such as traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, brain infections and brain tumours continue to affect thousands of children each year.

Professor Anthony Figaji said understanding the developing brain is essential because childhood is the most critical period of brain growth and development.

"The developing brain determines the trajectory of an entire life. Each of those lives shapes our society," he said.

Rather than concentrating on a single disease, the research unit will investigate the biological processes shared across multiple acute brain conditions. Researchers hope this multidisciplinary approach will lead to earlier diagnosis, more effective treatments and better patient outcomes.

Building on World-Class Research

The launch crowns years of investment in research infrastructure and international collaboration.

The African Brain Child programme has earned global recognition after establishing the world's largest high-frequency neurophysiological dataset in children, creating an extensive paediatric brain biobank and producing internationally recognised research in child neuroscience.

Its achievements include the National Research Foundation Science Team of the Year Award, the Harry Oppenheimer Fellowship and the first Wellcome Discovery Award awarded to a single principal investigator in Africa.

The new research unit will investigate the biological mechanisms of brain injury and disease, identify biomarkers and genomic signatures, study how medicines reach the brain and develop innovative diagnostic and treatment strategies.

Developing Africa's Scientific Talent

Beyond scientific discovery, the unit places strong emphasis on postgraduate education, mentorship and international collaboration.

It aims to produce a new generation of African neuroscientists, clinicians and healthcare innovators capable of addressing the continent's growing health challenges while strengthening Africa's contribution to global scientific research.

Community outreach programmes will also promote brain health awareness, encourage young people to pursue careers in science and ensure research remains responsive to community needs.

Lessons for Zimbabwe's Innovation Agenda

The UCT initiative also offers important lessons for Zimbabwe as the country seeks to strengthen its research and innovation ecosystem.

In recent years, Zimbabwe has established innovation hubs and industrial parks at state universities to commercialise research, encourage entrepreneurship and accelerate industrial development. Institutions such as the University of Zimbabwe (UZ), the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT), Midlands State University (MSU), Harare Institute of Technology (HIT), Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) and Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences (MSUAS) have embraced innovation-driven research aligned with the country's industrialisation agenda.

These hubs are designed to transform university research into market-ready technologies, support start-up companies, promote collaboration with industry and create employment opportunities for graduates. They also contribute to Zimbabwe's Education 5.0 framework, which broadened the mandate of universities from teaching, research and community service to include innovation and industrialisation.

The success of UCT's child neuroscience programme illustrates what can be achieved through sustained investment in research infrastructure, strategic partnerships, international collaboration and long-term funding. Similar investments across Zimbabwe's universities could help unlock home-grown solutions in healthcare, agriculture, renewable energy, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing.

Investing in Africa's Future

SAMRC Vice-President Professor Liesl Zühlke described the new unit as an important addition to South Africa's research landscape, while UCT Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Thokozani Majozi emphasised that impactful research should ultimately improve and save lives.

For Professor Figaji, the mission extends beyond scientific achievement.

On a continent where nearly half the population is made up of children and young people, investing in brain health means investing in Africa's future workforce, innovators and leaders.

"If we get this right, we can ensure prosperity for our continent. Children are, quite literally, our future," he said.

The establishment of the Discovery Neuroscience in Children research unit is therefore more than a medical milestone,it is a powerful reminder that universities remain at the heart of Africa's quest for scientific excellence, innovation and sustainable development.
