Dr Tagwire Takes Business Acumen To Senate, Eyes Pro-Business Policies

Businessman and Zanu PF Central Committee member Dr Kudakwashe Tagwirei says he will draw on his experience as an entrepreneur to contribute to Senate debates, particularly on policies aimed at creating a more conducive environment for businesses and driving Zimbabwe’s economic growth.

Dr Tagwirei, who was recently sworn in as a senator following his appointment by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, said his background in the private sector would allow him to bring practical business perspectives into the legislative process.

He said his appointment came unexpectedly.

“Firstly, I would like to thank His Excellency the President, Comrade Emmerson Mnangagwa, for appointing me as a senator. Well, least expected,” Tagwirei said.

His entry into the Upper House brings a prominent figure from Zimbabwe’s business sector into Parliament at a time when policymakers are seeking ways to stimulate investment, improve the ease of doing business and strengthen the productive sectors of the economy.

Dr Tagwirei said his experience as an entrepreneur could help shape debates around policies affecting businesses and the wider economy.

“I come from the business fraternity and also an entrepreneur. From that, I hope to bring that expertise into Senate, into debate, so that we can grow the economy in line with Vision 2030,” he said.

His comments suggest that his contribution could extend beyond general economic debate, with his private-sector experience potentially informing discussions on legislation and policies that affect investment, business operations, job creation and economic expansion.

Senator Tagwirei also said he hoped to use his position in Senate to help businesses improve their operations and contribute more effectively to the economy.

“We can be able to assist businesses to be able to improve the way we do business from Senate, so that we can all be successful,” he said.

With Senate playing a role in scrutinising legislation and shaping national policy, Dr Tagwirei’s business background could provide policymakers with perspectives drawn from the practical challenges faced by companies and entrepreneurs.
