World's First Solar-Powered Ambulance Completes Test in Kenya.

NAIROBI, Kenya — A solar-powered ambulance developed by Dutch university students has completed an 800-kilometre field test across Kenya, demonstrating how renewable energy could help bring healthcare to remote communities without reliable electricity or fuel.


Named Stella Juva, the vehicle was developed by Solar Team Eindhoven, a team of 23 students from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU Eindhoven) and two other Dutch educational institutions. The students worked on the project for about a year, with some putting their studies on hold to concentrate on the innovation.


The two-seater vehicle was tested in remote parts of Kenya's Narok region, including the isolated community of Mosiro, in partnership with Amref Health Africa. The students drove more than 800 kilometres across paved and difficult unpaved roads, with one journey to Mosiro taking about six hours because of challenging terrain.


Unlike a conventional ambulance designed primarily to transport patients, Stella Juva is essentially a mobile medical clinic. It is designed to take healthcare workers, medical equipment and electricity directly to communities that lack adequate health facilities and power infrastructure.


The vehicle is fitted with solar panels on its roof, while additional panels can be extended from its sides when it is stationary. The system supplies electricity to both the vehicle and its medical equipment.


During the Kenyan trial, the ambulance powered an X-ray machine, ultrasound scanner, automated external defibrillator (AED) and vaccine refrigeration equipment. According to the development team, while stationary and running the medical equipment simultaneously, Stella Juva generated more solar energy than the equipment consumed.


The two-day medical simulation, conducted with Amref Health Africa, demonstrated the potential to provide healthcare to approximately 200 people, although the equipment was not used on real patients during the test.


The vehicle can reportedly travel up to 715 kilometres on a sunny day and reach a top speed of about 120 kilometres per hour. Its battery stores solar energy, allowing the vehicle and medical equipment to continue operating when sunlight is unavailable. (


Isabella Wanningen, a 22-year-old member of Solar Team Eindhoven studying computer science and engineering, said the team was surprised by how well Stella Juva performed on Kenya's challenging roads.


The project is aimed at addressing a major healthcare challenge in Africa, where remote communities can face long distances to medical facilities and health centres may lack reliable electricity.


Amref Health Africa believes the technology could be particularly useful for maternal and child healthcare, including bringing ultrasound services to pregnant women in communities far from hospitals.
